How to Build a Simple Skincare Routine

Good skincare doesn’t have to be complicated. Discover why understanding your skin and focusing on the essentials can be the foundation of a healthier skincare routine.

A simple skincare routine is often the best place to start when caring for your skin. After all, healthy skincare doesn’t necessarily require an endless collection of products or a complicated daily routine.

Sometimes, applying layer upon layer of skincare products can have the opposite effect of what we’re trying to achieve. Certain ingredients may not work well together, while using too many active products can leave the skin feeling irritated, sensitive or overwhelmed.

If we think back to our grandparents, many of them followed much simpler skincare routines than we see today. While that doesn’t necessarily mean they experienced fewer skin concerns, it does remind us that caring for our skin doesn’t always have to be complicated.

Of course, modern life brings its own challenges. Our skin is influenced by many internal and external factors, including our environment, lifestyle, hormones and general health.

Something I believe is often overlooked is that our skin is the largest organ of the human body. It is living tissue, constantly renewing itself and responding to changes both inside and outside the body.

This is why I believe skincare should begin with understanding and respecting the skin rather than simply applying more products.

Good skincare starts with the fundamentals: keeping the skin clean, supporting its natural moisture balance, protecting it from environmental damage, and treating it gently.

Hydration plays an important role in maintaining soft, supple skin, while appropriate cleansing and daily care help support the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t to have the most complicated skincare routine. It’s to understand what your skin needs and care for it consistently.

The Three Foundations of a Simple Skincare Routine

A simple skincare routine begins with three essential foundations: cleansing, moisturising and sun protection.

1. Cleansing

Cleansing helps remove dirt, excess oil and impurities that accumulate on the skin throughout the day. The aim is to keep the skin clean without unnecessarily stripping away its natural protective oils or disrupting the skin barrier.

2. Moisturising

Moisturising helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance and supports its natural protective barrier. A well-maintained skin barrier plays an important role in keeping moisture in and protecting the skin from external irritants.

3. Sun Protection

Sun protection is an essential part of caring for the skin. Protecting the skin against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation helps reduce sun damage, premature skin ageing and the risk of skin cancer.

These three steps form the foundation of a simple skincare routine.

However, we also need to understand that skin concerns can develop for many different reasons. Our environment, lifestyle, hormones, genetics and general health can all influence the condition of our skin.

Sometimes, our skin may need additional care beyond these basic foundations. But before introducing anything new into a skincare routine, I believe it is important to understand the skin itself, how it functions and what may be contributing to a particular concern.

Another important consideration is recognising the difference between skin types and skin conditions.

For example, someone may have naturally oily skin but still experience dehydration. Similarly, someone with dry skin may also experience sensitivity. These differences matter because they influence how we approach skincare.

An important point to remember:

There is no single skincare routine that works for everyone.

Understanding your individual skin, recognising its needs and being mindful of the factors that influence it are the foundations of making informed skincare decisions.

Learning to Listen to Your Skin

If there is one thing I could encourage you to do, it would be this: learn to listen to your skin.

And by that, I simply mean notice your skin.

Notice how it responds when you’ve been feeling more stressed than usual. Pay attention to the changes you experience when travelling to a different environment, when your sleeping patterns change, or when you’re going through a significant change in your life.

Our skin often responds to what is happening both inside and around us.

By taking the time to observe what changes, when those changes occur and how your skin responds, you can begin to develop a better understanding of its individual needs.

Of course, learning to understand your skin requires patience. There won’t always be an immediate explanation for every change, and sometimes professional guidance may be needed.

But developing that awareness, being patient and learning to recognise what your skin needs can be far more valuable than constantly following the latest skincare trends.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading these notes as much as I’ve enjoyed sharing them with you, and that they’ve inspired you to approach your skincare journey with a little more understanding, patience and confidence.
